Botanical Garden II

Contemporary Embroidered tapestry wall hangings of flowers and plants which are inspired by close observation and appreciation of the natural world as well as a love of historical botanical illustrations & 17th century Dutch flower paintings.

With the medium of thread, the work has a dramatic, curious quality: the layers of thread are built up, but not too much, so the fragility of the pieces become an important part of the artwork. The multitude of fine 'marks' and threads that make up each piece convey a sense of ephemerality that lies in contrast to the permanency that the act of preservation aims to achieve. Machine stitching is used in a contemporary intuitive and impressionistic way: with the loose hanging threads you get a sense of the making technique.

I want to represent nature in a rough and vulnerable manner and focus lies on the unappealing vegetation, the straggly overgrown common weeds and plants as well flowers.

These works are also associated with the growing awareness of the environment, and the need for preservation. Important is also the story of the work done underground, the roots and the tubers, which is the basis of how the plants have developed.

Ongoing project. Each artwork is framed in 19th century frames or pinned away from wall and in contemporary bespoke frames. They range from approx 80 x 120 cm to 60 x 80 cm. The embroidery can be placed on different backgrounds, or directly pinned onto a wall, creating a space between the background and tapestry which generates beautiful shadows.
